Brompton Technology has introduced Extended Bit Depth, a cutting-edge new software feature that enables film and virtual production professionals to bring their image quality on LED to the next level. Available as a free software update that works with all existing and new LED panels containing Brompton’s R2 or R2+ receiver cards, Extended Bit Depth delivers a substantial increase in dynamic range performance, adding up to 3.3 additional bits of precision in low-brightness performance – thereby reducing visual artifacts and bringing out additional detail and nuance in dark areas of the image. Extended Bit Depth is also fully compatible with Brompton’s Dark Magic, ShutterSync, and other leading features for in-camera visual effects.
With Extended Bit Depth, users can also reproduce high dynamic range (HDR) content up to 10 times darker than previously possible without compromising peak brightness for HDR highlights – meaning HDR highlights can be displayed to their full potential. The benefits of Extended Bit Depth are most obvious at low and ultra-low brightness levels, where it brings out additional detail and nuances in dark areas of the image while also reducing visual artifacts. Compared with panels not using the feature, panels with Extended Bit Depth enabled are noticeably smoother and show more detail.
Extended Bit Depth is also fully compatible with Brompton’s ShutterSync feature and typically offers two to three stops of additional dynamic range on camera – a massive advantage when filming an LED screen displaying dark, shadowy content. The additional range can also be used to achieve brighter, more realistic emissive lighting – the camera sensitivity can be increased substantially when using Extended Bit Depth, making the panels, and any lighting interactions from them, appear more dynamic on camera.
“We’re very excited about Extended Bit Depth available via a free software update, as our customers can instantly realize more value and versatility from their existing LED panel investments,” shared Daniel Warner, Technical Project Specialist at Brompton Technology. “Users can reap the benefits without having to re-cable their stages or really change anything – simply load Tessera v3.4, and you’re ready to go.”
